The Client
Trauma Informed LA (TILA) is a Southern California non-profit promoting healthier communities through social justice, equality and cultural humility. Through several outlets they publish the Our Stories Matter Podcast a therapist directory and a Speakers Bureau.
Project Challenge
At the height of the first California Covid-19 lockdown, TILA chose launch a new season of their podcast by scheduling a Facebook Live event. This gave them the perfect opportunity to reach a broad spectrum of mental health care community online.
Facebook Live is a great fit for nonprofits that have a story to tell via live video. In this case, TILA needed to “template” the first of many live events to promote future podcast episodes, and raise donations.

Discovery & Strategy
Although Facebook Live is a great platform for broadcasting content direct to viewers, it lacks the back-end functionality needed to produce a remote event with multiple participants. Think of it as the difference between broadcasting a feed from your webcam, vs producing a one hour speakers panel on television. While any organization can simply turn on their webcam and begin broadcasting on Facebook Live, they aren’t able to produce segments in advance, animate opening and ending title cards, or cut to specific cameras.
For TILA’s first Facebook Live event, six speakers were scheduled, all broadcasting from their seperate homes. These participants would need to be able to communicate with each other outside of the live broadcast, while other members could moderate the live chat during the event.
The Solution
- Prior to event, circulated a broadcast schedule to all participants via Google Sheets. This included a detailed outline of the event by: [Segment Name] [Segment Length] [Segment Start Time] [End time] [Segment Feed Source] [Notes]
- Configured Lightstream to connect directly to the TILA Facebook page.
- Developed “scenes” within Lightstream to cycle between during broadcast
- Day of event ran virtual green room, allowing participants to communicate with one another in real time.
